Description
Porsche Carrera 6 illustration, Porsche Carrera 6 image, Racing Team Holland, The Porsche 906 came as a replacement to the 904. 50 examples were sproducedin order to meet the FIA new Group 4 Sports Car category homologation requirements. Thanks to a tubular space frame and a laid up by hand unstressed fiberglass body, the car only weighted 1,280 lb. The most used engine was the 901/20 6-cylinder lightweight racing engine with 220 hp and carburetors, although some examples that were raced by the factory team received fuel-injected or 8-cylinder engines. In its debut in the 1966 24 Hours of Daytona, the Carrera 6 finished 6th overall, and won its class. Hans Herrmann and Gerhard Mitter finished fourth overall and won the class at the 12 Hours of Sebring, as well as at the 1000 km of Monza, class victories at the 1000 km Spa and the 1000 km Nrburgring and a privately entered 906 secured an overall victory at the 1966 Targa Florio. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans, that same year, the 906 placed 4-5-6-7 behind three Ford GT40 Mk IIs.
