Description
Mercedes 300 SEL 6.8 AMG, July 25, 1971 at the 24-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps. Pole position went to the Chevrolet Camaro driven by Ivo Grauls and Peter Hoffmann, followed by the Alpina-BMW 2800 CS of Niki Lauda/Grard Larousse, then the first works Ford Capri with Dieter Glemser and Alex Soler-Roig, and the Schnitzer-BMW 2800 CS piloted by Rauno Aaltonen and Helmut Kelleners. In total, 60 racing touring cars took the start in the Ardennes. At the end, Factory drivers Hans Heyer and Clemens Schickentanz took second place and made AMG world-famous overnight. Engine output was 250 hp at 4000 rpm and a top speed of 140 m/h. AMG co-founder Erhard Melcher tweaked the eight-cylinder power unit using all classic methods. Flares on all corners were added to make room for the massive 10 and 12 by 15-inch magnesium wheels. Aluminium doors helped reduce the cars weight, larger front wishbones, a more robust rear axle with a heavy-duty differential and smaller, stiffer suspension air bellows made the saloon fit for the racetrack.
