The 1972 Fiat Abarth 124 Rally was based on the 124 Spider. Its main purpose was to receive FIA homologation for the World Rally Championship group 4 racing class. At the time 124 had already won the 1972 European Rally Championship at the hands of Raffaele Pinto and Gino Macaluso.
Most notable modifications over the standard spider were: The Abarth-tuned twin-cam engine was upgrated to 126 hp by replacing the standard twin-choke carburettor with 2 Weber 44 IDFs, and by fitting an Abarth exhaust with a dual exit muffler; Transmission is the all-synchronised five-speed optional on the other Sport Spider models; brakes are discs on all four corners; kerb weight is 2,000 lb; hood, extention flairs and the fixed hard top are fibreglass painted black; the rear window is Plexiglas and the doors aluminium; front and rear bumpers were deleted; tires are 185/70 VR 13 Pirelli CN 36 on 5.5 � 13� four-spoke alloy wheels; optional Recaro corduroy-and-leather bucket seats; and a small thr...
I have worked in the design field for more than thirty years, and have recently embarked on a new career path as a fine art illustrator. Originally from Liege, Belgium, I grew up near Spa and the famous road course there, which fueled a love of cars and racing that has never waned.
